Over the 11th century, Fouras castle was erected to control the Charente estuary and institute a toll. A key element in the Charente's defense system, Fort Vauban hosts in its donjon the regional history museum, a duly listed "Musée de France". Ten rooms present the town's history, its environment, and - more specifically - its maritime, military and seaside past.
